Songdo Beach Busan

Songdo Beach was the first official public beach in all of Korea. The beach opened in 1913 and in 2000 underwent 5 years of reservation and planning to make it more popular for tourists.The beach is horseshoe shaped and surrounded by restaurants, apartments and hotels. At the night it can be quite romantic with the perfect spot to watch the sunset and view the lights from the businesses lit up. In the distance you can see Jagalchi Fish Market. There are rest areas near the beach where you can have picnics or drink with friends also available are shower and changing rooms. In the ocean there are some cool whale statue structures and other things to see. The beach is quaint and the perfect location to relax and have your own space unlike the bustling Haeundae Beach.

How to get to Songdo Beach Busan:

Take line 1 to either Nampo station or Jagalchi station and take bus 7, 30 or 96 and get off at Sondgo Beach Entrance. The bus journey should be about 20 minutes.

Taejongdae Park Busan

Taejongdae Resort Park in Busan is a natural park located at the southern most tip of Yeongdo-gu. Taejongdae Park Busan is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Busan. There are plenty of things to do and it is the perfect location for family day trips or with friends.  At the very most southern tip of the Taejongdae there is an observatory along with coastal walking trails along the rocky cliff face and a light house. Through-out the island you find a temple, a gun shooting range, walking trails, hot springs, boat cruises, museums and plenty of restaurants offering very fresh fish. Taejongdae Park Busan offers some stunning views of the ocean from the cliffs. On a clear day you can see a Japanese Island called Daema Island (Tsushima Island).

How to get to Taejongdae Park Busan:

From Busan station you can take bus No.88 or 101 and get off at Taejongdae Park. The bus journey is around 40 minutes and the bus should come every 10 minutes. When returning you can use the same bus.

Acha Mountain Fortress Seoul

Acha Mountain Fortress is located in Gwangjin, Seoul on Mt. Acha. Mount Acha is only 287 metres high but was a very important sight during the Three Kingdom Period in Korea. A fortress was built on this mountain by the Goryeo Kingdom with great views of the Hangang River and valleys below making it an important strategic stronghold. Many battles were fought here for control of the regions and lots of people died. The fortress is 1.3 km in length but there is not much left of it today. You can still see parts of the wall, some old tombs and other interesting things. The area is now a park that offers the usual facilities such as sports facilities, outdoor exercise equipment, walking trails and places to rest. Being elevated at over 200 metres you can get some stunning views of the Hangang River, Seoul City and more.

Manguri Park Seoul

Manguri Park in Jangnang, Seoul is the only public cemetery in Seoul. The whole site which contains 28,500 grave sites stop accepting new graves on March 23rd, 1973. Since then it became a public park called Maguri Park. The park is located right on the border of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. In recent times the park has become more popular due to the number of celebrities or historical figures buried there. Some of the people who fought against the Japanese occupation and signed the Korean Declaration of Independence are buried here. Around Manguri Park you can find the usual walking trails, sports facilities and areas to rest. Another great addition to the park were some statues  / monuments and information about some of the historical figures who are buried there.

Yongma Waterfall Park Seoul

The Yongma Waterfall Park is located in Jangnang, Seoul. The park boasts the tallest artificial waterfall in Asia. The Yongma Waterfall is 51.4 metres in height with two waterfalls either side. To the left is the Blue Dragon Waterfall that stands at 21.4 metres and to the right is the White Horse Waterfall which stands at 212 metres. The water from the water falls lands in a big pond at the bottom. The main feature of Yongma Park  is without a doubt the waterfalls however there are other things to enjoy. For sports enthusiasts there are some tennis courts and a football field. For people who like to relax there plenty of benches, pavilions and open green areas. Many people like to visit Yongma Waterfall Park before they start their ascent of Yongma Mountain which is located right beside the park and offers great views of Seoul city and other interesting things along the climb.

The park is open 24 hours a day all year round. The waterfall is sometimes turned off for repair.

Ogeum Park Seoul

Ogeum Park in Seoul is located right outside Ogeum station. Inside the park you can find the tombs of the Munhwa Ryu Clan. Ogeum park opened in the early 1990′s and is popular as it is located right beside the train station. The park is located 200 metres above ground level and offers nice views of the local area. The park doesn’t have much green open space as it is hilly but instead has many hidden paths through the tress. There are also many sporting facilities available. One of the more interesting points in the park is the foot acupuncture path. People walk down this path in their bare feet and the stones work on different pressure points in your feet. If you wish to relax or read a book you will find plenty of benches scattered around the park or Pagodas that offer nice views of the area.

Hakdong Park is located in Gangnam in Seoul. The park is small but is the perfect spot to take a break from the busy areas of Gangnam. Located nearby the park is the Korean Museum of Embroidery. During lunch hours people working in the area like to visit the park to have lunch. Hakdong park has outdoor exercise equipment and 4 badminton courts. For people who want to relax and take in their surroundings, there are a couple of pagodas located around the park.

National Cemetery Seoul Korea

The National Cemetery in Seoul was established in 1955 and at the time was the only national cemetery. The National Cemetery in Seoul holds the bodies of over 160,000 Korean soldiers, Independence fighters,  police officers, Korean president’s and many notable people have been buried in this cemetery. The National Cemetery is for Korean citizens however there is one foreigner and his name is Francis Schofield. Francis Schofield founded the Severance Hospital at the start of the 20th century in Seoul and the medical college which later became Yonsei University. He was involved in the March 1919 Independent Movement in Korea against the Japanese. He was expelled from Korea by the Japanese but later returned to Korea after the Korean war and lived the rest of his life in Korea.

The cemetery is full of history located throughout the area. There are numerous memorial monuments / towers and statues dedicated to people or events during war time in Korea or involving Korean people around the world. Also there are a few memorials halls. There is the Photographic exhibition hall which displays pictures of soldiers and items that they had on them when they died. The Memorial Hall and the Relics Hall. All of these halls show us the history of Korea and it’s people.

Sayuksinmyo Tomb and Park Seoul

Sayuksinmyo in Seoul is known as “The Tombs of the 6 Martyred Ministers” in English. Sayukshin Park and Tombs area located on Noryangjin Hill. This area holds the tomb of 6 Ministers who were loyal to King Danjong, a park and memorial area. King Danjong was overthrown when he was 12 and later murdered by King Sejo. The Ministers stayed loyal to King Dajong and sought to restore him to power as the King. They made a plan to assassinate King Sejo but the their plan was uncovered by a spy. The 6 Ministers were put to death and became Martyrs. Also another 70 people including family members of the Martyrs were executed. This happened in the mid 15th century and over the years, the area around their tombs has been improved and monuments and statues added.

The area around the tombs which includes, Sayuksin Park which is located on top of Noryangjin Hill and offers great views of Seoul City, Hangang River and the 63 Building.

If you want to find out more about the 6 Martyrs you should watch “Six Martyred Ministers”. This is a Korean Drama that was released in 2007. The drama was made jointly by KBS  (South Korea) and KCT (North Korea).

How to get to Sayuksinmyo Tombs and Park Seoul:

Take line 1 or 9 to Noryangjin station or line 9 to Nodeul station and with all stations leave exit 1 and head straight. The park and tombs should be less than a 5 minutes walk away.
