Garak Market Seoul Korea

Garak Market in Seoul opened in 1985. Garak Market is a large wholesale food market (543,451 m2) that is open to the public. The prices at Garak Market are considerably cheaper than supermarkets and the more you buy the cheaper they get. Garak Market is located just outside Garak Market station in huge warehouses. The warehouses are divided into different sections such as live stock,vegetables, fish, dried fish, fruits etc. At night auctions are held and many restaurants owners come here to inspect and buy food to cook up and serve at their restaurants. This is a good time to visit but it can get quite hectic with all the trucks coming and going and people running around. On average there are about 130,000 people who visit Garak Market everyday. If you just wish to browse or buy some cheap food for use at home you should come in the afternoon and bring friends if possible. If you buy together you can get good discounts.

Noryangjin Fish Market Seoul

Noryangjin Fish Market is located in Seoul near to Noryangjin station, south of the Hangang River. Noryangjin is one of the largest Fish markets in Korea and is open 24 hours a day all year round. The market is easy to access as it is connected to Noryangjin station. In the early hours of the morning, seafood auctions are held and fish is bought by restaurant owners to be used later that night in restaurants all across Seoul. Fish isn’t the only option at Noryangjin Market. You can literally buy anything that lives in the sea or water. Noryangjin Market is located in a big warehouse with two floors beside the Hangang River. On the first floor you can find the auctions and seafood vendors selling all kinds of interesting seafood. On the second floor there are some seafood restaurants serving some very fresh or even live seafood. You can also buy fish at the market and the restaurants will prepare and serve your food for you.

The market is open 24 hours, 365 days a year. The auctions are usually on from 01:00 am – 06:00 am.

Dongincheon, Shinpo Market

Shinpo Market is located in Incheon and is an old market that dates back to the 1890′s. Incheon port was one of the ports that was first forcefully opened up to foreigners for trade in the late 19th century by the Japanese. The opening of the ports brought a lot of trade / visitors and the local merchants set up stalls to sell goods to foreigners, mainly the Japanese, Chinese and Westerners. The market was only officially registered as a market in 1970. Nowadays, Incheon is still a leading transportation hub with ports and Incheon International Airport.

The market has developed over the years and now sells all different kinds of items. There are also a few Russian and Filipino stores to cater for the high influx of Russian and Filipino sailors who visit the market. Foreigners and locals still enjoy visiting Shinpo Market to pick up items and try the local speciality foods.

Opening Hours:

Open from 09:00 am – 23:00 pm. Depends on the store.
Closed every second Sunday of the month.

Sorae Pogu Fish Market in Incheon

Sorae Pogu Market in Incheon is located at Sorae port. The area was originally a small fishing village but it quickly expanded with the development of the nations largest salt field in the 1930′s and the opening of the Incheon – Suwon railroad. The market still has the feel of an old fishing village despite being in the centre of a huge city. Along the port many vendors have set up shop to sell and serve fish with drinks. At night you can find many people having drinks and eating the freshest fish by the river side.

On January the 11th, 2010 a section of the market was burned down in an accidental fire. As the fire was early in the morning no one was injured. The shops have been rebuilt and the market is now as popular as ever.

Once a year in mid- October the Incheon Soraepogu Festival is held. The festival has many events and the roads in the area are closed of to traffic so that a parade can be held. There are a number of activities that both children and adults can enjoy.

How to get to Sorae Pogu Fish Market in Incheon:

Take Incheon Subway line 1 to Incheon Bus Terminal station and leave exit 2. You will be in front of the Bus Terminal and get on bus number 21-1.  Get off at Soraepogu stop which is at the bridge. The fish market will be on your right beside the river and boat docking area.

Jagalchi Fish Market

Jagalchi Fish Market in Busan is the largest fish market in Korea. The market is located beside Nampo Port which means the fish can be delivered quickly and kept fresh. The market is famous as many elderly woman run the fish stands and have done so since the men were off fighting in the Korean War. A lot of restaurants come here to buy fish from wholesalers and even for the tourists visiting the markets, the prices are considerably cheaper than the supermarkets.

The market is very colourful and vibrant. As you walk around the market you will be amazed at all the different kinds of fish available. Most of the market is is indoor in a huge building and there are also fish stands outside in the surrounding area. There are many fish restaurants were you can taste various fish and even raw and live fish. If you purchase fish at the market you can visit one of the many shops there that cut and wrap your fish for you. They even have restaurants there where you bring your own fish and they will cook it for you.

The market is open from 05:00 am – 22:00 pm everyday. Some shop hours may vary.

The market is closed on the last Tuesday of every month.

Take line 1 to Jagalchi station and leave exit 10. Head straight and take the second right. Continue to head straight until you come to the fish market. The fish market is located along the pier.
