Hongdae Free Market is an open air market in Hongdae Park. The market was set up in 2002 as part of cultural events celebrating the Japan – Korea World Cup. The name Free Market probably comes from the fact that to Koreans, Flea and Free sound the same. The market is located in a small park across the street from Hongik University.
The Flea Market focuses on showcasing local artists’ work or artistic and creative design items. What you won’t find at Hongdae Flea Market is second hand items. What you will find are paintings, clothes, bags, jewellery and other handmade items. Usually some local entertainers will set up their guitars or instruments and busk in the area.
A lot of promotion and special events are held in the park. At night there have been a few small concerts. The Market is great for picking up unique Korean gifts for you partner, family or friends.
Opening Hours:
The Hongdae Market is open from March – November, every Saturday. The market is from 13:00 pm to 18:00 pm. As it is an open air market the weather will play a big role in determining opening hours. If raining the market will be closed.
