Dongdaemun Market

Dongdaemun Market was set up in the early 20th Century. Like Namdaemun Market it is built nearby an old fortress wall gate. Dongdaemun means east gate in Korean. Some of the best bargains can be found at Dongdaemun Market. Dongdaemun Market is also called Dongdaemun Fashion Town and the latest fashions can be found at reasonable prices. At Dongdaemun Market many different kinds of products can be found such as clothing, accessories, bags, shoes, textile, fabrics but the market specializes in fashion, clothes and garments.  The market is also famous for being open at night. Usually shops are open for 18 hours a day from 10:30 am till 4 or 5 am. During the day foreigners and locals like to pick up some clothes and eat out while at night the local retailers and retailers from around Korea come to purchase items at wholesale prices for their stores.

The whole area of Dongdaemun has undergone a lot of changes over the years. Up until a few years ago the market was centred around Dongdaemun Stadium. The stadium was knocked down and is now an area called Dongdaemun Culture and History Park. There are now many shopping malls located in modern buildings in the area and also the Cheonggyecheon Stream passes through this region.

A lot of the shopping malls or markets are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays. The markets are open from 10:30 am – 4:30am

How to get to Dongdaemun Market:

Take line 4 or 2 to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park and leave exit 1 or 14. The whole area in Dongdaemun is scattered with markets, shops and malls. Alternatively, take line 4 to Dongdaemun Station.
